

Carol (Smith) Fuhrman Shedd, 87, passed away on Friday, March 17th. Born in Fort Wayne, IN on January 15, 1936, she was the first daughter of Asa D. and Lillian (Woebbeking) Smith. She graduated from North Side High School in 1954 and following graduation, began her career in dentistry as a Dental Assistant for Dr. James McClure.
In August 1955, she married Kenneth W. Fuhrman, the father of her children, David, Sandra and Daniel.
In 1964, when Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne began a dental hygiene program, she enrolled while raising three small children at home and graduated in 1968. She then went to work as a Dental Hygienist for Dr. Edwin C. Errington, Sr. – retiring in 1984.
Beginning in 1978, Carol was an early volunteer at Matthew 25 Clinic, and was active in various positions for over 20 years. She spent many years giving of her time and talents around Fort Wayne, including Miss Virginia’s, Homebound Meals and Street Reach for the Homeless.
In 1979 she married Wilfred G. Shedd and welcomed two stepchildren, Rick and Leanne, to her family.
Carol was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church for over 40 years where she served on various committees and sang in the choir.
She also enjoyed singing with the Festival Choir for several years. Choral singing was a great pleasure her whole life. She played the cello in her younger days and loved attending Fort Wayne Philharmonic performances. Pastimes included quilting, reading, bridge, chimes and flower gardening. Family gatherings were especially happy times for her, as her family was spread out across the United States.
She is survived by her children: David W. Fuhrman of Bainbridge, IN, Sandra (Michael) Shavlik of Fort Wayne, Daniel (Shawna) Fuhrman of Virginia Beach, VA and Dr. Frederick (Dr. Philippa) Shedd of Columbus, IN. Grandchildren: Samantha (John) Fuhrman Burns, Zachary Fuhrman, Sarah Fuhrman, Seth Fuhrman, Bridget Murphy Fuhrman, Andrew (Olivia) Shavlik, Jacob (Sarah) Shavlik, Austin (fiancée Gabi) Fuhrman, Spencer Fuhrman, Hunter Fuhrman, Kyle (Rachel) Shedd, Taylor (Hillary) Shedd, Nicholas Shedd, Rob Byron and Alex Byron. Seven great grandchildren, with another due later this year.
She had several nieces and nephews she also loved dearly. Carol was also preceded in death by her husband Wilfred, sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Peter Mogg, step-daughter Leanne and her parents.
Celebration of Carol’s life will be Saturday, April 8th at 11am, in the Towne House chapel, 2209 St. Joe Center Road. Visitation with family prior to the service from 10-11am. Arrangements have been entrusted to D.O. McComb and Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave, Fort Wayne.
