Mr. David Dwayne "Slaughter" Warnsley, age 67, passed away on September 14, 2025, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Born on May 29, 1958, in South Bend, Indiana, David lived a life marked by devotion to family, unwavering friendship, and a spirit that brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.
David was the beloved husband of Annette and a proud father to his son David and daughter Starr. He cherished his role as a grandfather to Xavier, Annelle, Laila, and Kaneise. His love extended beyond immediate family—he was a guiding presence to his daughter-in-law Danielle and embraced Ashley Smith as a special daughter. His godson, Michael Lee Jr. also held a meaningful place in his heart.
Family was the cornerstone of David’s life. He shared deep bonds with his brothers, Michael Kevin Warnsley, Bennie Leroy Butts, and Michael Lee; his sisters-in-law, Denise Warnsley and Pamela Gary and Dorothy Lee; and his aunt, Charlotte Harris. He was also surrounded by a host of nieces and nephews who were touched by his warmth and humor.
David was preceded in death by his mother Rosetta Butts, father Emery Butts Jr., brothers Emerson Craig Butts & Minus West, and sisters Barbara Jean West & Sharon Decarlo Ghant.
Known as “Slaughter,” David had an infectious personality that lit up every room he entered. Whether through his legendary storytelling or quick wit, he had an unmatched ability to make people laugh. Friends often described him as the funniest person in the room—a title he wore with pride. In the same manner, he was an excellent mentor to others, and his words held so much strength and purpose for all those he spoke to. He committed his life to being clean and was a faithful member of Narcotics Anonymous for 35 years where he helped so many others overcome their struggle.
A hardworking man through and through, David embodied the roles of husband, father, provider, protector, and friend with steadfast dedication. He supported those around him with quiet strength and unwavering loyalty. He was selfless in his service to others and showed this by serving in the U.S. Army from 1977 – 1983. David demonstrated his ability to lead others by working as a plant supervisor throughout his employment history. After years of hard work, he finally retired in 2020 in Bluffton, Indiana.
Outside of his family life, David found joy in baking—his chocolate chip cookies and pound cake were famous among those lucky enough to taste them. David was also a “GRILL MASTER” and passed on his talent to his son. A devoted fan of Notre Dame and Chicago Bears football, he cheered passionately for his team’s season after season.
May the memory of Mr. David Dwayne "Slaughter" Warnsley bring comfort to all who knew him and continue to inspire love, laughter, and strength in the lives he touched.
