Dorthy Knuth, 90, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2021, at home with her children around her. Dorthy was a life-long Fort Wayne resident. Born September 19, 1931, she was one of 11 children, and always said they didn't have much money, but they were far from poor. Family was everything to Dorthy, she was the family historian and she loved Thanksgiving (who wouldn't love 75 relatives in someone else's house?) and Christmas Eve. Dorthy, along with her brothers and sisters, created a family bond that remains strong today through the fourth generation. She was a member of Trinity English Lutheran Church and loved the May Music Festival there. Dorthy graduated from South Side High School in 1949 and started working at Lincoln Life shortly thereafter, through 1960. She worked at Rogers Markets in Waynedale from 1960 to 1983, ending her career there as Office Manager, and setting an early example for women that they could work and raise a family too. She traveled extensively with her husband for his work, sometimes in a private jet to the east coast for a business dinner or to a conference in Hawaii… other times in a minivan, with a canoe strapped on top and a bunch of camping gear in the back. In her later years, she wanted to be home, around family and friends. She helped to organize a family cookbook that turned into a 200+ page masterpiece (which is what happens when you invite a family the size of hers to contribute). She was an avid gardener, and even in her last days, a beautiful flower could make her smile. Dorthy taught her children to live life to the fullest, and maybe to be just a bit stubborn. Dorthy is survived by her children, Denise Knuth (Kathy Kuhn), Mark (Beth) Knuth and Erica Knuth; grandson, Ian (Alexandra) Knuth; great-granddaughter, Lucy Michelle Knuth; sisters, Eileen (Don) Keesler and Joan (Ivan) Bosler; rother, Larry (Linda) Hollman: sisters-in-law, Patty Stauffer and Bonnie Hollman; as well as 28 nieces and nephews along with their many children and grandchildren who Dorthy doted on, or disciplined, as needed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas George Rockne Knuth; parents, Arnold and Alma Hollman; sisters and brothers, Sally Bobay, Bud Hollman, Ralph Hollman, Don Hollman, Geraldine Wyss, Dallas Hollman, and Bill Hollman; brothers--in-law and sisters-in-law, Jack Bobay, Helen Hollman, Patricia Hollman, Arnold Wyss, James Bruick, Elaine Hollman, Butch and Mary Knuth, and Richard and Patricia Linsmeyer; and nephew, Terry Hollman. Sounds like a pretty good greeting committee waiting for her with her heavenly father. Her great big family, and especially her children, will remember her with love, and will miss her dreadfully. The family would like to thank the caregivers and nurses from BrightStar and Fort Wayne Visiting Nurse and Hospice, who allowed them to honor their mom's wishes and keep her at home for her last five months. Funeral service is noon Monday, Decmber 13, 2021, at Trinity English Lutheran Church, 405 W. Wayne St., Fort Wayne, with visitation one hour prior. Visitation also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, December 12, 2021, at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 6750 Covington Road, Fort Wayne. A short graveside service will follow the funeral. Family and friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon to celebrate Dorthy after the graveside service - details to follow. Memorials can be made to Trinity English Lutheran Church or the angelic nurses at Visiting Nurse and Hospice. But the woman loved flowers, so please feel free to fill up the funeral home.
