Gary Evan Black, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, and man of steadfast faith, entered the arms of Jesus on January 29, 2026, at the age of 87.
Born on October 4, 1938, in Columbia City, Indiana, Gary devoted his life to learning, teaching, and quietly serving others. His passion for education led him to graduate from Indiana Tech and to earn his master’s degree from Saint Francis College, with additional studies at Indiana University. Gary spent his career shaping young minds as an educator at Huntertown, Decatur Catholic, and Norwell, before dedicating 30 years to South Side High School, where he was honored as a member of the Quarter Century Club. Even after retirement, his love of teaching continued as he shared his knowledge with students at Ivy Tech.
A lifelong man of faith, Gary was a devoted member of Grace Point Church of the Nazarene. His Christian walk was reflected not only in words, but in daily obedience—faithfully reading his Bible and praying for family and friends without ceasing.
At home, Gary was a constant source of love, guidance, and support for his family. He shared nearly 66 years of marriage and 73 years of life with his loving wife, Carol, and was a devoted father to his sons, David and Daniel. He found joy in life’s quieter pleasures: playing the piano, working on puzzles, fishing, tending to his cherished rock collection, and spending meaningful time with family and friends. His gentle wisdom, patience, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Therol and Hertha Black; and his brothers, Dean Ramsey (Norma) and Nelson Black (Jean), all of Columbia City.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Black; his sons, David Black of Fort Wayne, and Daniel Black and his wife Cindy of Dallas; two granddaughters, Jenna Black (Chris) and Devon Black (Jay); and one great-granddaughter, Raven. His family, across generations, brought him great joy.
Gary’s life was one of quiet faithfulness, deep love, and enduring impact—a legacy that will continue through the generations he so dearly loved.
A memorial service celebrating Gary’s life will be held, 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, with a gathering one-hour prior.
