Gerald E. Arthur

Gerald E. Arthur, 68, of Fort Wayne, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 21, 2020. He was born to Betty (Hensley) and the late Francis Harold Arthur on January 7, 1952 in Union City, IN. He graduated from Wes-Del High School in 1970. Gerald held a Bachelors and EdS degree from Ball State University and a Masters degree from Eastern Michigan University. He married his college sweetheart, Karen Ogle, on August 3, 1974 in Sheridan, IN. Gerald began his teaching career in Ida, MI as a High School History Teacher. After moving to Fort Wayne, IN in 1983 he continued his teaching career at Miami Middle School as a Social Studies Teacher and later at Croninger Elementary School as a Spanish Teacher. Gerald moved into School Administration in 1995 where he served as the Assistant Principal at Harrison Hill Elementary School and Principal at Lindley Elementary School. After his first retirement, Gerald served as a Substitute Principal at Haley and Harris Elementary Schools. After his second retirement, he served as chairperson of the board for the Aldersgate Academy. Gerald retired in July 2020. He was a long-time member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne. Gerald enjoyed nature, working outside, traveling, reading Presidential biographies, and most of all being a son, husband, dad, and grandad.

Gerald is survived by his wife of 46 years, Karen Arthur; children, Michael David (Leeann) Arthur of Dunkirk, MD and Rebecca Anne (Steve) Kaverman of West Lafayette, IN; grandchildren, Bethany, Carolynn, Brooke, and Jackson; mother, Betty Arthur of Muncie, IN; sister, Margaret Swanson of Altona, IL; mother-in-law, Mary Anne Ogle; brother-in-law, Aaron (Cindy) Ogle all of Sheridan, IN; and a host of relatives and friends. Along with his father, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, David Ogle; brother-in-law, Otha Swanson; and uncles, Leon Hensley and Harry Shelby.

Funeral service will be on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church (2417 Getz Rd, Fort Wayne, IN 46804) at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior. Social distancing guidelines will be practiced. Visitation will also be on Monday, October 26, 2020 at D.O. McComb and Sons Funeral Home Covington Knolls (8325 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46804) from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A private burial will be held at a later date.
