Jean Lisle McComb, a beacon of love and selflessness, passed away peacefully of natural causes on January 19, 2024, in her hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Born on March 10, 1936, in the same welcoming town, Jean’s life was a testament to the enduring power of dedication, intelligence, and love.
A proud graduate of North Side High School, Jean's commitment to excellence was evident early on. She never missed a day of school in four years and was recognized as the best citizen by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her vibrant spirit led her to serve as a class officer throughout her high school years, setting a precedent for the remarkable woman she would become.
Jean's professional journey was marked by her innovative spirit and caring heart. She spent six years crafting words that connected with listeners at WGL radio station, Fort Wayne, as part of the continuity department. Later, she made a significant impact at D.O. McComb & Sons, where she was instrumental in creating human resource policies that cared for the well-being of every staff member. Her initiatives, including granting birthdays off and providing holiday meals, were a reflection of her generous nature.
Family was the cornerstone of Jean's life. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter A. McComb Jr., who passed just 37 days before her. Together, they raised a family that was the epitome of love and companionship. Jean was the cherished mother of Douglas M. McComb and David W. (Cheryl) McComb. Her legacy continued to flourish through her grandchildren, Brenden Walter (Libby) McComb, Jannelle (Brad) Thompson, Jessica (Josh) Phegley, Nicole McComb, Nikalette (Jimmy) Clarke, and David Walter (Annabella) McComb Jr., and her adored great-grandchildren, Stella Phegley, Calvin Phegley, Elliana Thompson, and Molly McComb.
Jean's interests reflected the breadth of her love and care. A passionate gardener, she found joy in the simple act of nurturing her yard to vibrant life. One time winning yard of the month at their home in Glenwood Park. Her love for travel took her around the world, yet she always treasured the time spent wintering in Florida, and summers at Lake James and Suttons Bay in Michigan. An avid reader, Jean often immersed herself in books, sometimes reading one per day, a testament to her intelligent and curious mind.
Described by those who knew her as loving and selfless, Jean's presence was a gift to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She lived by the words of Helen Keller: "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—they must be felt with the heart." Jean truly embodied this sentiment, touching the hearts of many with her warmth and generosity; she lived her life by the golden rule, “Do unto others, as you would have those do unto you.”
As we remember Jean Lisle McComb, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and overflowing with love. Her influence will continue to resonate through the lives of her family and all who were graced by her presence. Jean's story is not one of an end, but a beautiful legacy that will be cherished and carried forward by the generations that follow.
