

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl & Goldie Smithson; sisters, Sue & Stella; granddaughter, Breyonna; and nephews, Matthew & Thomas. He was a beloved son, a cherished brother to Stella (Jack) Walker, Sue Ann (Deet) Phelps, Rodney (Kellie) Smithson, Ronald (Bobbie Sue) Smithson, Rita (Steven) Paine, Carolyn Terry and Robin Dell'Aquila. Joe was also a greatly loved and adored uncle to many, nieces & nephews, in addition to great-nieces & nephews.
Joe's life was marked by love for his family and friends. His daughters Goldi (Matthew) Whitney, Robin Smithson, Katheryn Good (unbiological) were the light of his life. He adored his grandsons Corbin (Olivia) Christie and Skyler Thompson; granddaughters Avilyn & Franki Whitney, Brianna Snyder, Phoenix & Caliope Reeb; as well as great-grandson Draco Thompson. Joe's heart overflowed with joy & pride for them.
A dedicated construction worker and roofer by trade, Joe had an unyielding work ethic that inspired those around him. Yet it wasn't just hard work that defined him – he also knew how to enjoy life to the fullest. Whether camping under the stars or kayaking along serene waterscapes, Joe found solace in nature's embrace. His infectious smile lit up every room he entered – a testament to his warm spirit and big heart. Known for being the life of any party he attended – always ready with a joke or story that would leave everyone laughing until their sides hurt – Joe brought joy wherever he went.
The loss of Joe is deeply felt by all who knew him: from his family members to countless friends whose lives were touched by his kindness. Although we mourn our loss today in Fort Wayne IN., let us remember that Joe will live on through the memories we hold dear in our hearts. May you rest in peace knowing your legacy lives on through those whose lives you've touched.
A visitation will be Saturday June 15, 2024 from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM, at D.O. McComb and Sons Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Avenue Fort Wayne, Indiana. A funeral service will begin at 3:00 PM, following the visitation.
