

Judge Philip Thieme, 90, passed away peacefully at home on November 25, 2025, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. A distinguished jurist, decorated military officer, and devoted family man, he leaves behind a legacy of service that spanned continents and decades.
Born on September 30, 1935, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Judge Thieme remained deeply connected to his hometown throughout his life. After earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Miami in Florida, he embarked on a legal career that would culminate in 25 years of service as a Superior Court Judge in Allen County. His tenure on the bench was marked by fairness, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
Concurrent with his judicial career, Judge Thieme also served with honor in the United States Army Military Intelligence. Rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he held multiple postings as a defense attaché at U.S. Embassies in Ethiopia, Sudan, Nigeria, and Cameroon. His work abroad reflected not only his strategic acumen but also his dedication to representing American interests with dignity and professionalism.
Judge Thieme was a Fellow of the prestigious Explorer’s Club in New York City, a multidisciplinary society dedicated to the advancement of field research, scientific exploration and resource conservation.
Judge Thieme’s life was enriched by a love for global travel and cruising—pursuits that mirrored his international military service and deep curiosity about the world. These adventures were often shared with his beloved wife Betty Thieme, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son, Christopher (Mari) Thieme; granddaughter, Claudia (David) Cogut; grandson, Hans Thieme; great-grandson, Theodore Thieme Cogut, and his dear friend, Barbara Ulmer. His family continues to honor the values he upheld throughout his life—service, wisdom, and compassion.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at D.O.McComb & Sons Funeral Homes - Covington Knolls, 8325 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46804, from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, with a Funeral Service to begin at 1:00 PM. Burial to follow at Lindenwood Cemetery.
