Robert Simmons

Robert “Bob” Simmons was born July 23, 1945, to the late Louis and Drella Willis Simmons, Sr. in New Orleans, Louisiana. He departed this life at the age of 79, on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was raised by the late Lavoice and Estelle Simmons Harvey, Sr., after the passing of his mother, at the age of two.

After serving in the United States Army, where he earned his wings as a paratrooper, Bob relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he met and married his wife, Linda “Kay”. He enjoyed playing softball and league bowling. He attended Pilgrim Baptist Church early on, but was later baptized at Christ Temple Apostolic Church. He retired from Hattersley and Sons as a licensed plumber/steamfitter, after 40 years of service. He was affectionately known as Poppie by the grandchildren, a title that he cherished with all his heart.

Robert “Bob” and Linda “Kay” Greene-Simmons were married 56 years at his passing. In addition to his wife Kay, Bob leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Akenya Cooper (Gary); son, Ondrayco Greene (Lisa McCain); ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, all of Fort Wayne, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Julia Diane Gibson of Goldsboro, North Carolina; three brothers, Charley Simmons, Sr. of Hartford, Connecticut, Thomas and Jerry Simmons of Springfield, Louisiana; two sisters, Mildred Simmons Sanders of Hammond, Louisiana and Flora Simmons of Springfield, Louisiana; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Lawrence Willis, Sr., Willie, Louis Jr., Theodore, James, Dan, and Landry Simmons; four sisters, Estelle Simmons Harvey, Alice Simmons Green, Lillian Simmons James and Ada Simmons Berry.

A visitation for Robert will be held Friday, August 16, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Homes - Lakeside Park, 1140 Lake Avenue, Fort Wayne, IN 46805. A funeral service celebrating his life will be 11:00 AM Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Greater Christ Temple Apostolic Church, 2940 S. Anthony Blvd, (46806) with visitation one hour prior. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Covington Memorial Gardens, 8408 Covington Rd, Fort Wayne, IN 46804.
