

Roland E. Weber, 88, of Fort Wayne, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2011 at VA Northern Indiana Healthcare System facility in Marion, IN. Born July 23, 1923 in Chicago, IL, he served in WW II as a 1st Lieutenant with the 390th Bomb Group of the 8th Airforce, US Army Air Corps flying out of England; and, flew 25 missionsas a bombardier on a B-17 "Flying Fortress", before being shot down over Germany on Christmas Day, 1944. Mr. Weber was one (1) of three (3) of that plane's crew of ten (10) to survive being shot down. Following a fortuitous parachute landing, he was captured by Nazi forces and spent six (6) months in a German prisoner of war camp before being liberated by Russian Forces, attacking West. Following WWII, Mr. Weber received a Bachelor's of Science degree in engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology; and, later received his Masters in Business Administration from Indiana University, later honored as being one of its Distinguished Alumni. Mr. Weber had a long and distinguished career in the insurance industry. He was a recipient of the designation Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter; and, was one of the founders of Insurance and Risk Management, Inc.; serving in senior officer capacities during his professional career with I&RM from which he retired. Mr. Weber was a member of Masonic Lodge; and, the Scottish Rite and Shrine since 1956. Following his retirement, he worked ceaselessly on Veteran' Affairs; serving on several committees, often acting as a spokesperson for veterans in need. Mr. Weber's spouse, Margarete "Midge", preceded him, passing in 2007. Mr. Weber is survived by four (4) sons and eight (8) grandchildren: Thomas M. Weber of Oregon (and his three (3) children; viz.Todd Michael, Aaron and Alicia, all of Fort Wayne); William S. Weber, of Leo, IN (and his two (2) sons, Will and Michael); Murray S. Weber, of Fort Wayne; and Dr. Scott M. Weber, of Ogallala, NE (and his three (3) children; viz. Justin; Matthew; and Lauren, all of Lincoln, NE).
