Ruth H. Newman

Ruth H. Newman, 101, of Fort Wayne went home to be with Jesus on Friday, July 5, 2024, at Adams Heritage in Monroeville. Ruth was born on January 16, 1923, in New Haven, Indiana to the late Clarence and Helen (Poirson) Brown. She married Albert W. Newman, Sr. on July 23, 1960. Al preceded her in death on July 18, 1986. Ruth could be described as a determined and independent woman. Growing up during the great depression, she learned early on the value of things, working hard in life to support herself and her family. At the age of nineteen, Ruth went to work for Wayne Pump, making munitions for WWII, where she then remained employed for the next 30 years. At the age of fifty, Ruth was one of the first women to be hired at Dana Corporation to work on the factory floor. She worked at Dana for 13 years, retiring in 1986. Ruth was a true “Rosie the Riveter.” She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, doing yard work, and was known to be able to fix anything. Ruth enjoyed hosting her family's annual Christmas gathering. Ruth’s large, blended family, as well as close family friends, would pour into her home every year on the Sunday before Christmas to celebrate together. This was a tradition that went on for well over 50 years. Family was number one in her life, and she loved each of them dearly. Throughout her lifetime Ruth attended both Queen of Angels and Most Precious Blood Catholic Churches and was devoted to her faith until the very end. Ruth is survived by her son, Timothy (Terri) Berry of Monroeville; grandchildren, Phyllis (Keith) Wilkins, Jennifer (P.J. - Deceased) Gasparini, Rachael Juricak, Jeff (Danielle) Newman and seven great grandchildren, Gino, Luca, Addison, Gavin, Dylan, Andrew, and Nathan. Ruth was preceded in death by son, Kurtis A. Berry; stepson, Albert W. Newman, Jr.; two stepdaughters, Shirley Cobb, and Georgiann Belna; and six siblings. A celebration of Ruth’s life service will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at C.M. Sloan and Sons Funeral Home 1327 North Wells Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46808. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A private inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be directed to the Allen County SPCA (Humane Fort Wayne).
