Tom was born on August 28th, 1933 in Weston, West Virginia to Louise Ward Ferry and Thomas Andrew Ferry, Sr. He attended Weston High School where he was active in student government and athletics. Shirley Limer Ferry was his high school sweetheart and the love of his life. They were married for 66 years and she preceded him in death on February 24th of 2018.
Tom graduated from Morris Harvey College (now The University of Charleston) in Charleston, West Virginia and was a proud football letterman. He began his career with Owens-Illinois glass company in Charleston and worked for the company throughout his entire career. Career moves took the family to several states before his retirement when he and Shirley returned to West Virginia, settling in Salem. The couple traveled extensively following their retirement.
He was an active member of the United Methodist Church and volunteered at the Mission in Clarksburg. Throughout his life he loved sporting events especially those at WVU. He was happiest when he was in West Virginia trout fishing or deer hunting and spent many hours releasing fingerling trout to stock streams. Tom loved spending time in the hills of Gilmer County hunting and restoring a log cabin on the farm of his nephew, John Limer.
Tom will be remembered by family and friends alike for his caring heart, easy laugh and warm smile. He especially loved children and enjoyed playing cards and visiting with family and friends. He was a loving husband, proud father, caring grandfather, uncle and brother-in-law. Through his kindness he left the world a better place.
Tom is survived by his children Deborah Hamilton-Lynne of Austin, Texas, Tom Ferry and his wife Bonnie of Ponca, Nebraska, Jill Case and her husband John of Fort Wayne, Indiana; grandchildren Elizabeth Hamilton, James W. Hamilton III and his wife Laura, Thomas Matthew Hamilton, Alison Case and Carolyn Case and her husband Alex Sprague; great-grandsons James W. Hamilton IV and Hunter Emmett Hamilton; sisters-in law Dolores Limer Woofter and Onalea Limer Hyre as well as several nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A memorial service in Clarksburg is planned for August of this year. Donations may be made in honor of Tom Ferry to the Alzheimer’s Association and to the Clarksburg Mission homeless shelter in Harrison County or a charity of your choice.
