

Walter Lee Murry was born on January 26, 1948, in Indianola, Mississippi, to Willie Murry and Ethel B. Murry (née Armstrong). He lived a life marked by service, faith, devotion to family, and a love of travel and togetherness.
Walter honorably served his country after graduating high school, being drafted into the Vietnam War where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Following Vietnam, he was stationed at various Army bases and completed multiple overseas military assignments including Panama, Korea, and Germany. He retired from the United States Army as a First Sergeant after 24 years of decorated and distinguished service in Heidelberg, Germany. After his military retirement, he continued his career in civil service with the U.S. Government in Germany for 22 years.
In 1992, Walter married Gabriele M. Murry. Together they shared many years abroad before relocating from Heidelberg to Grafenwöhr, Germany, in 1999. He retired fully in 2015 as a Military Training Specialist with the Department of Defense. In 2019, Walter returned to the United States, living in Indiana with his daughter Amira, later relocating in 2020 to Virginia with his daughter Chi-Kobi, and ultimately returning to Indiana in 2024.
Walter was a devoted and loving father and took great pride in his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, sightseeing, and traveling throughout Europe. He especially cherished family activities and spending quality time together, including weekend bike rides around Heidelberg and Grafenwöhr.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Gabriele M. Murry, and his children: Catrina S. Francis of Sturtevant, Wisconsin; Chudney L. Murry of Racine, Wisconsin; Chi-Kobi C. Murry (Michael Turner) of Redlands, California; Jamila J. Murry (James Murry) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Amira A. Spears (Michael Spears) of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Khadijah Francis, Brian Ivy Jr., Imani Francis, Ariyanna Clarke, Jonathan Turner, Sianna Turner and 4 great grandchildren.
Walter is also survived by his siblings: Leslie Edwards of Chicago, Illinois; Mae Willie (Harlee Steward) of Chicago, Illinois; Virgia A. Tate (Rev. Louie Tate) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Hazel A. Bass (Victor Bass) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Brenda J. Murry of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Willie Murry Jr. (Gabriele Murry) of Palmer, Alaska; Ilean Wiggins (Anthony Wright) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Minister Janet A. Gared of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Lisa Jackson of Dallas, Texas; and Timothy Murry of Dallas, Texas, to include many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Luevenia Murry, as well as his parents, Willie and Ethel Murry.
Walter Lee Murry will be remembered for his strength, his dedication to service, his love for family, friends and his community, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Friday, January 2, 2026, at D.O. McComb and Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home 4017 Maplecrest Road, Fort Wayne, IN, with visitation two hours prior.
Committal and burial will be held at 1:00 pm Friday January 2, 2026, at Marion National Cemetery, 1700 W. 38th Street Marion, Indiana 46953.
