

William R. “Bill” Harter, 90, of Fort Wayne gently passed in to the arms of his maker Friday, November 27, 2015. He was born on January 14, 1925 in Evansville, Indiana. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II where he served as a Fire Controlman First Class, in the U. S. Navy. He served aboard the U. S. S. Franks DD-554. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal with 2 Silver Stars and 1 Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 11 Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Stars and the Philippine. He worked as an electrical engineer and retired as a corporate executive at E-Systems Memcor Division where he negotiated military radio contracts with foreign governments, including a presentation to NATO and the Allies. He also worked with NASA, BOEING, ITT, and Magnavox. He was a graduate of Purdue University where he was a member of Eta Kappa Nu and IEEE. He enjoyed technology, golf, bowling, Purdue basketball and football, and playing cards. He was a member of American Legion Post 241, Huntington Masonic Lodge, and Eagles # 248. Surviving family include his wife, Betty Claire Harter; children, Donald (Cathy) Harter, Sally Harter-Horton, Gail Ann (John) May; grandchildren, Shanann, Jeremy, Ryan, Logan, Devin, Madelynn, Lauren, Jordyn, Joshua, Mandy, Sarah; eight great grandchildren; and his former wife, Lois L. Harter. He was preceded in passing by his parents, William Rush and Marion L. (Keil) Harter; and a son, William Randall Harter. Funeral service will be 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 6750 Covington Rd., with visitation starting at 12:00 pm noon. Entombment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne. Memorials may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church or Visiting Nurse.
