FORT WORTH -- Carl W. "Bill" Buckman, 85, a Korean War veteran who served aboard USS St. Paul, died on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014. He was born June 21, 1929, in Charlotte, N.C.
Service: Pastor David Fergeson of Grace United Methodist Church will conduct a funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shannon Rose Hill Funeral Chapel.
After transferring from the Navy to the Air Force, Staff Sgt. Buckman was stationed in Alaska. In January 1959 when Alaska became the 49th state, he hoisted the new 49-star American flag for the first time over his base. He served at isolated radar sites in Japan, Turkey and several states. In 1973 he concluded his 20-year military career when he retired at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo.

Survivors: Brothers, Joe, Jim, Don and Robert Buckman; sisters-in-law, June, Anita, and Tommie Buckman; and 12 nieces and nephews.
