Dolores M. Runnels of Ft. Worth, TX, went home to be with her Lord on August 5th at the age of 87. Dolores received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Corpus Christi, where she also met her husband. She taught elementary school while taking on the many responsibilities of a pastor’s wife until deciding to start a family and stay at home with her children.
Dolores always had a smile on her face. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who always gave of her time and heart for others. She had an unwavering faith and was actively involved in several Baptist Churches across the years directing VBS, teaching Bible Study and participating in Women in Missions. She enjoyed time with her grandkids, traveling, and league bowling where she garnered numerous trophies. She played a mean game of 42 and was even willing to pair with those of us who were horrible and played a trump when the hand was already hers. She had a great sense of humor and tolerated her kids and grandkids many jokes and pranks like a champ, even putting up with the occasional affectionately given title of “Geezer”. She loved the holidays and enjoyed decorating for all of them One of her favorite activities at Christmas was passing out presents from underneath the tree. She proved that easygoing sense of humor time and again as we all took turns trying to get a picture of Granny bending over digging for gifts under the tree making sure nothing was left behind. She loved to spoil all her kids and grandkids and made sure to individualize gifts for everyone, putting thought into each purchase. She also enjoyed making so much food that we could eat for days, and rest assured, there was always, always, always plenty of chocolate.
Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Olan Runnels, her sister Myra Christian and by her parents Bill and Ida Lee Paxton. She is survived by her three children, Dr. Marti Runnels (and wife Dede) formerly of Plainview, TX, Marla Hogan of Ft. Worth, TX, and Melody Allega (and husband Dr. Rohn Allega) of Joplin, MO, as well as 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Gloria Gomez, Westridge Manor, Connie’s Compassion Care and Area Community Hospice of Plainview for their many expressions of loving kindness and exceptional care.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, support of Teen Challenge in Ft. Worth is suggested.
The last thing we want is to place anyone at risk. An expression of care and concern exhibited by your presence is not expected. Mother would not want one person to be in harm's way either. We feel your love and compassion. Nothing more matters.
