He joined the Navy after high school in 1965 and attended medical training through the Navy to become a corpsman assigned to the Marines. He was stationed at the Navy Coronado Hospital in
San Diego, CA and later served in Viet Nam. He was severely wounded in combat and received a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He had the heart of a soldier all of his life and loved all branches of the military. He enjoyed attending Purple Heart conventions and usually took one or two grandchildren along.
Don was a strong Christian man who loved the Lord and lived his faith. Soon after we married in 2001, he asked me to join him at The Hills Church. We often took young grandchildren with us and ended up substituting in their classrooms on occasion. Soon we were asked to help with a 3 year old class regularly. We did that for 13 years. He had a gift and a love for little ones and they loved him right back. He was very generous with his time and talent and the word no was not in his vocabulary.
Don loved his family especially the grandkids and great grandkids.. He rarely missed a football, baseball, or soccer game, or any theater or awards program. He taught several how to drive, took them to Home Depot to the kids' building classes, and taught them how to count money and read before they started kindergarten.
Don worked as a sheet metal fabricator, following in his dad's footsteps. Eventually he opened his own sheet metal shop. He often pointed out things he made around town, such as bicycle racks in parks and his work at the Bass Hall. He loved flying airplanes and was recently taking an online refresher course so he could fly his drones legally. Don enjoyed genealogy, pottery, woodworking, leather working, and learning to play the guitar. Don knew how to do a lot of things and was always our family's go-to guy for how to repair or accomplish anything. My daughter often stated he was the smartest man she ever knew. He also liked to shoot guns so he belonged to a gun club. He enjoyed metal detecting so he was a member of the Cowtown Metal Detector Club for over 30 years. He enjoyed reading, using the computer, watching national news, gardening, and growing plants.
Don told lots of stories and kept everyone entertained. He never met a stranger and made friends quickly. He was so fun to be around.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and his two older siblings, Norma Jean Wilson Andrade and Hugh Lynn Wilson.
