Elvira Lara

Elvira was born on January 7, 1925, to Manuel Martinez Avendaño and Irene Gonzalez Garcia, in Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Her family moved to Mexico City in the 1930s, where she studied junior high, and then moved to Puebla to pursue a degree in nursing. She graduated from Escuela de Enfermeras del Hospital Latino Americano, on February 21, 1949.

After graduation, she worked in Mexico City at Hospital ABC (American British Cowdray Hospital) from 1949 to 1960. During her tenure as a nurse, she rose to become supervisor of the operating room. She recounted her love for that profession, keeping fond memories of that period and of her friends and colleagues, many of whom she kept in touch with until her passing.

On July 23, 1960, she married Angel Fortino Lara Azuara, with whom she had 3 children, Angel, Lemuel, and Eduardo.

In 1982, she migrated with her husband to Texas, where they began pastoring Hispanic churches. During her ministry as a pastor’s wife, she effectively led women’s groups, taught children, and led the ministries of counseling and evangelism in multiple churches in the Rio Grande Valley area, Central Texas, and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. She was known for her dedication, patience, and straightforwardness. With a quiet demeanor, she effectively built relationships across the churches, helping the ministries she loved to thrive.

She will be remembered for always encouraging her family and friends to pray, read the Bible, and pursue a relationship with Jesus Christ. Her love for God will continue to be both an example and a reminder of what a dedicated Christian can accomplish in his or her allotted time.

Elvira was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years; and her siblings, Maria Estela and Tomas.

She is survived by her sons and their families, Angel (son) and Virginia (wife), with Vicky (John), Angelica (Deante), Dina, and Joshua. Lemuel (son) and Maye (wife), with Lemuel, Josue (Elizabeth), and Benjamin. Eduardo (son) and Elizabeth (wife), with Carlos (Lauren) and Eric. Great Grandchildren, Charlie, Parker, John, and Tristan.

Elvira nació el 7 de enero de 1925, hija de Manuel Martínez Avendaño e Irene González García, en Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, México. Su familia se mudó a la Ciudad de México en la década de los ‘30s, donde estudió la secundaria y luego se mudó a Puebla para obtener una licenciatura en enfermería. Se graduó de la Escuela de Enfermeras del Hospital Latino Americano, el 21 de febrero de 1949.

Después de graduarse, trabajó en la Ciudad de México en el Hospital ABC (American British Cowdray Hospital) de 1949 a 1960. Durante su tiempo como enfermera, ascendió a supervisora de quirófano. Relató su amor por esa profesión, guardando gratos recuerdos de esa época y de sus amigas y compañeras, con muchas de las cuales se mantuvo en contacto hasta su fallecimiento.

El 23 de julio de 1960 se casó con Ángel Fortino Lara Azuara, con quien tuvo 3 hijos, Ángel, Lemuel y Eduardo.

En 1982 emigró con su esposo a Texas, donde comenzaron a pastorear iglesias hispanas. Durante su ministerio como esposa de pastor, dirigió con eficacia grupos de mujeres, enseñó a niños y dirigió los ministerios de consejería y evangelismo en múltiples iglesias en el área del Valle del Río Grande, el centro de Texas y el área metropolitana de Dallas-Fort Worth. Era conocida por su dedicación, paciencia y franqueza. Con un comportamiento tranquilo, construyó relaciones de manera efectiva en las iglesias, ayudando a que prosperaran los ministerios que amaba.

Será recordada por alentar siempre a familiares y amigos a orar, leer la Biblia y buscar una relación con Jesucristo. Su amor por Dios seguirá siendo un ejemplo y un recordatorio de lo que un cristiano dedicado puede lograr en su tiempo asignado.

Su esposo, Ángel F. Lara, con quien estuvo casada por 56 años, falleció antes que ella. Sus hermanos que se adelantaron fueron María Estela y Tomás.

Le sobreviven sus hijos y sus familias, Ángel (hijo) y Virginia (esposa), con Vicky (John), Angélica (Deante), Dina y Joshua; Lemuel (hijo) y Maye (esposa), con Lemuel, Josué (Elizabeth) y Benjamín; Eduardo (hijo) y Elizabeth (esposa), con Carlos (Lauren) y Eric; Bisnietos, Charlie, Parker, John, and Tristan.
