Karen Hauzer, 79, passed away March 4, 2023 in Texas. She was a longtime resident of the Southwest where she raised a family and built a beautiful life with her loving husband, the late Milo Hauzer, a U.S. Navy Veteran.
She was born in Michigan to John and Lorraine and grew up in small town with her four brothers, Jack, Harry, Mike and Dale, and her sister, Linda. She would tell great stories of her time growing up with her brothers and sister.
Caring and kind, Karen enjoyed spending time with her family. She had fun playing cards and games. She was good at Scrabble, and she had a knack for playing music by ear without a sheet.
She would go dancing and bowling, and was on a league with friends. She also spent summers at the lake going boating, fishing, and camping. These trips often became adventures with wonderful memories.
A hobbyist, Karen enjoyed crafting and made ceramics, blankets, costumes and many other special gifts that will be remembered and treasured. She also had a passion for gardening and would grow tomatoes, corn, bell peppers and all sorts of vegetables. She liked cooking and sharing recipes and dishes with the ones she loved, and for years everyone gathered at her house for the holidays.
She also enjoyed raising chickens, geese, turkeys, pigs, and goats, and one year she helped a goat deliver babies. She liked the saying, “You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl.”
Karen was an animal lover through and through, but she especially loved dogs. She would always be willing to take them in and give them a home, or watch them for family and friends. Her dogs brought a smile to her face and gave her so much joy. She would take them on errands and long trips in the car, and there was always room on her lap for a furry friend. She rescued and cared for many pets throughout her life, including a monkey. She also loved bird watching and would put out hummingbird feeders in the spring and watch them fly by. Animals had a special place in her heart.
Hardworking, determined, and strong, Karen was always up for trying new things, including being an entrepreneur. She held many jobs in her life, one was being a homemaker, but her longest professional job was as an insurance agent, where she met many people in her community. In retirement, she and Milo traveled and sold concessions at festivals and the local fair; making cherished friendships along the way.
Rain was a special treat in the Southwest, and Karen liked sitting outside under a patio to hear the rain and watch it fall. She appreciated the all the beauty of nature and would fill pots with flowers and plants all around her house. Lilacs were one of her favorite flowers. The color lilac symbolizes helpfulness and serenity, and both reflect Karen’s personality and strength.
She shared all her passions, love and wisdom with her children, family and friends. Always willing to help anyone in need, Karen was a devoted wife, a loving and cherished mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and a wonderful friend. She will forever be in our hearts.
She is survived by her children, Donna (Arlie), and son, Justin (Becca). Teddi (Mike) and son, Siler, and daughter, Eden. Rachel (John) and daughters, Cree, Tasha, and Brittany. Aaron (Twyla) and daughter, Tesslia. Great grandchildren Michael Jr., Jason, Zachary, Annabelle, and Shiloh. Her siblings, brothers, Mike and Dale, her sister, Linda, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Milo, her father, John, her mother, Lorraine, and her brothers, Jack and Harry.
A private service will be held. Donations can be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at aspca.org.
