Thomas Lamar Guthrie was born October 8, 1927 near Sidney, Texas, in Comanche County and passed away at his home in Godley, Texas, on May 16, 2022. He was the son of John Thomas Guthrie and Minnie Elizabeth McNeil Guthrie and had eleven siblings. Lamar grew up farming peanuts, raising cattle, and attending church developing a strong work ethic and solid Christian values. Friends he and his family made during those years would remain dear and devoted friends, and they and their families have continued to be a part of the Guthries’ lives and activities for a century.
After graduating from high school, Lamar served in the United States Army during the occupation of Japan in 1946 and 1947. Upon his return from the service, he continued to help his family on their farm and also began work at Consolidated, which is now Lockheed Martin, in Fort Worth, Texas, where he developed life-long friendships until his retirement in 1990. He married his beautiful wife, Carrie in 1950, and in 1958, they purchased the Guthrie Farm in Godley, Texas, where the family has run cattle and produced hay as well as hunted, fished, and entertained. Barns and acreage were added, and a beautiful ranch home was built where family, friends, neighbors, and church groups have gathered for decades for a host of activities.
Hard work came naturally to Lamar but so did fun and fellowship. At South Hills Baptist Church in Fort Worth, not only did he serve as a deacon, but he also planned events for the seniors driving a van across the United States providing this older generation with the opportunity to see beautiful sights and scenic landscapes, enjoy excellent musical entertainment, and dine on fine food wherever they ventured. For over 60 years, Lamar and Carrie square danced, and he served as President of Circle Eight Square Dance Club. He was also an active member of the National Management Association during his tenure at Lockheed Martin. In addition, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 65 years. In Godley, he served as a deacon at First Baptist Church, served as President of the Lions Club, and participated in community activities and fundraisers as well.
Survivors include his faithful and loving wife of 72 years, Carrie Alice Alford Guthrie; three daughters, Brenda Guthrie Bibb and husband, Clay, Sherry Guthrie Jones and husband, Burt, and Marla Guthrie Bratton and husband, James; grandchildren, Chantelle Blanks Hurt and husband, Rusty, Sean Blanks, Chad Jones, Mallory Slattery and husband, Jesse, and Kelvin Bratton; great-grandchildren, Avery and Jensen Slattery; brother Bobby Guthrie and wife, Ann; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
