Visitation with the family will be from 4-8 pm on Monday, June 12 at Shannon’s Rose Hill Funeral Home, 7301 E Lancaster in Fort Worth. A private burial service will be held at a later date.
Margie, or Gram as she was affectionately known by her two children, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, was born at Fort Worth All Saints Hospital on August 31, 1928, to Everett S Gober and Johnnie V Stagner Gober. She attended Morningside Elementary, Daggett Junior High and Paschal High School. She entered TCU at the age of 16 and graduated at 20. She completed her master’s degree in educational administration at North Texas State University (now UNT). She was an incredible student, making straight A’s in every grading period, save just two B’s. She married Edwin D Powell in June,1948 and began teaching second grade at Morningside Elementary. After her children were born in 1953 and 1957, she stayed home and substituted occasionally, returning to teaching at South Hills Elementary in 1962. Margie had an illustrious career serving as a teacher instructional specialist. Stymied in pursuit of an administrative job due to her husband already being a FWISD administrator, she only was promoted to assistant principal at JT Stevens Elementary after her husband was disabled by cancer. Just before Edwin’s death in 1981, she was promoted to principal of Westcliff Elementary. During her tenure at Westcliff, students there continually scored at or near the top of all schools on standardized tests.
In March 1987, Margie married John H Alexander, a widower, neighbor and friend. As such, both extended families were richly blessed by their union. Margie and John both retired in June 1987. Together they enjoyed dancing, traveling, ranching, and lake life. Upon Margie’s retirement, the FWISD School Board named the new wing of Westcliff Elementary in her honor.
Margie was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Edwin and John, and her dear daughter, Melinda Lee Tuttle, who shared her mother’s academic excellence and was an award-winning Chemistry teacher in Opelika, Alabama, Dallas ISD and Mesquite ISD. Melinda’s husband, Dr Charles Tuttle, was similarly successful as a chemistry teacher in DISD before his retirement. As a widow, Margie enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, activities with the Women’s Club of Fort Worth, and was a long-standing member at University Christian Church.
Margie’s son, Dan, served as a teacher’s aide, teacher, principal, director and assistant superintendent in FWISD, superintendent in Everman and Crowley ISD’s and Associate Professor for Educational Leadership At TCU.
Margie is survived by her son, Dan and wife Debbie of Benbrook; son-in-law Dr Charles Tuttle of Mesquite; grandchildren Melissa Tuttle of Arlington; Nicole Tuttle of Richardson; Dr. Jason Powell and wife Dr Kersti Powell of Bala Cynwyd, PA; Alexander Powell and wife Anne of Haslet; Adrienne Cole and Tammy Roemer of Hudson Oaks; Aubrey Ivey and husband Scott of Georgetown; Kyle Amato and partner Rachel Albright of Crawford, CO. Great grandchildren include Anders and Thomas Powell; Joshua, Jeremiah, Matthew and Benjamin Powell; Fin, Logan and Gabriel Cole; and newborn Imogen Wilde Ivey (Immy).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or Survive and Thrive.
Margie’s family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the staff and residents of Westmore Senior Living in Westworth Village for making the last seven years of her life as easy and rich as possible.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.shannonrosehill.com for the Alexander family.
