Marshall James Leggett peacefully passed away on March 2, 2020 at the age of 90 years old. A native of Washington, North Carolina he was born on December 6, 1929. He attended Milligan College where he met his wife Jean of nearby Mountain City, Tennessee. Together, they celebrated 66 wonderful years of marriage. Dr. Leggett was ordained at Hopwood Christian Church and after graduating from Milligan in 1951 continued his education at Christian Theological Seminary, earning a Master of Divinity degree, followed by a Master of Arts degree from Butler University, all with honors. In addition, Milligan College, Kentucky Christian University and Midwest Christian College each granted him honorary doctorate degrees.
Marshall served for 34 years in ministry in Tennessee, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. He also played a major role in the establishment of Emmanuel School of Religion in Milligan, Tennessee and Sayre Christian Village in Lexington, Kentucky. In addition, he served on the North American Christian Convention executive committee for 13 terms in various capacities, including president of the convention.
In 1982 he became the 13th president of Milligan College, a position he held until his retirement in 1997 when he was granted the honorary title of Chancellor. Under his leadership the College experienced a major turn around and progress that continues to this day.
During his career he spoke at countless churches, revivals, conferences, camps, and conventions. He was an insightful author of numerous articles and books, sharing his wisdom and calling on followers of Christ to use their gifts in service of the Church and our Lord. Most of Marshall’s retirement years were in Fort Worth where he continued his writing and involvement with the local church through teaching and leading Bible studies.
His influence will live on for generations to come in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him and being blessed through his ministry. A most fitting tribute is found in the words of his favorite passage of scripture, “Well done good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Master.” Matthew 25:23
In addition to his wife, Jean, Marshall is survived by two daughters, Terry and Sandy, and three granddaughters, Lia and her husband Eric, Lara, and Emy.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Milligan College at 101 Neth Dr, Milligan College, TN 37682 or Sayre Christian Village at 580 Greenfield Dr, Lexington, KY 40517.
