Of
Mary Alice Cunningham
“she speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watched over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed…”
Proverbs 31:26-28 (NIV)
Mary Alice Johnson Cunningham also known as “Buck” was born on the 6th of October in the year of 1943. Mary was the 7th of eight children born to the late Odell and Alice Johnson, in Jewett, Texas. Mary accepted Christ into her life at an early age. As a child she was an active member of South Salem Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Estell and Pastor Jenkins.
She received her education at George Washington Carver, where she graduated in 1961. After graduating she began to spread her wings and moved to Fort Worth, where she became gainfully employed by “The Amon Carter Family” as a loving caregiver and domestic engineer.
In the winter of 1963 at Bill Sobbs Grocery Store, back in the butchers block, while carving meat, she began to melt the heart of L. C. Cunningham. The two met and began dating for about a year, then L.C. proposed to Mary. In the year of 1966 the two wed and became one. To this great union two wonderful children were born, Yolanda Kay and Reginald Damon Cunningham. Mary served as a devoted wife and loving mother.
In 1975 she became employed by General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin, there she was a electrical assembly engineer. It was there where she was a dedicated employee for 19 years. After falling ill with breast cancer she took early retirement in 1994. Leaning on her strong faith in God at Pilgrim Valley Baptist Church under the leadership of her pastor Rev. W.G. Daniels she won the battle of breast cancer after about five years.
Mary loved to cook, gather with family and travel the world, until her bundle of joy arrived her only grandson Austin Cunningham, he was her everything and they spent so much time together, he bought her so much joy.
In 2016 she began her decline with a diagnosis of dementia. As her fond memories faded she became weaker and her light began to dim. On May 6th, Mary was welcomed into the gates of heaven and received her angel wings.
Left to carry abundance of memories to eternity is her loving and devoted husband of 54 years L.C. Cunningham, daughter Yolanda Kay Cunningham, son Reggie Cunningham and her one and only grandson Austin Cunningham.
Mary leaves to cherish her siblings Nadine Johnson, Martha Carrington, S.T. Johnson(Carole) and Vester Melcancon. Proceeded in death her parents Odell and Alice Johnson, Edna Mae Johnson, Dorothy Johnson, Ray Oden Johnson and James Johnson and many other loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
