Maudie Virginia Nelson, 77, of Burleson, Texas passed away on Thursday, August 28th, 2025. She was surrounded by her loving family as she went peacefully to meet our Lord. She was a loving wife to her late husband Jerry Don Nelson for 57 years as well as a caring and attentive mother to her three children, Bonnie Nelson, Donna Cox, and Jerry Nelson. She was a beloved sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, colleague, and Christian.
Maudie was born in McFarland, California on June 18th, 1948 to Mr. and Mrs. Isaac D. Vandever. She completed her education at Tarrant County Junior College in Fort Worth, Texas in 1981 where she then became the supervisor of environmental services at Hughley Hospital. She gave so much to her community for 38 years before retiring in 2015.
She was honest and never compromised who she was. She was a conversation starter, and embraced those who came into her life. She stood by her family no matter what. She stopped at nothing to give her children the best lives and succeeded.
She had an enormous love for books and cooking. The aroma of banana pudding would hook the nostrils of whoever walked in the door and the dish would be gone in an instant. Maudie and her husband fixed up vehicles regularly, and she had a fondness for her Ford Mustang.
She was preceded in death by her father, Isaac Vandever and mother, Madeline (Graves) Vandever, and four brothers.
She is survived by her daughters Bonnie Nelson of Burleson, Texas – Donna Cox and husband, Larry Cox of Arlington, Texas – son Jerry Nelson and partner, Greyson Gibson of Burleson, Texas – grandson Eric Cox of Fort Worth, Texas – granddaughter Ashley Cox and partner, Jasmine Miller of Sacramento, California – great granddaughter Elizabeth Cox – brothers Charles Vandever and wife, Dorothy Vandever of Fort Worth, Texas – Jerry Vandever of Burleson, Texas – David Vandever and wife, Susie Vandever of Burleson, Texas. And many other family and friends who knew and cherished her.
Maudie Virginia Nelson’s impact is felt in such a positive and beautiful way. She changed lives, leaving them better than where they were before. She still exists because of her imprint on life. She still exists because of her kindhearted nature. She still exists because of our memories. She still exists because she’s in the arms of the Lord.
Celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
