

Miriam Elizabeth Smith (Betty), 93, of Burleson, Texas, our beloved, mother, Mimi, and friend, went to be with the Lord on August 3, 2025. Betty was born in Eastland, Texas on January 9, 1932 to Robert Chappell and Lillian Mae Ferguson. She grew up in a loving home as the youngest of four children. She graduated from Eastland high school and later received a bachelor's degree from North Texas State.
Betty married Johnnie Hicks on May 30, 1952. They had a son, Bryan Douglas Hicks, on September 15,1960. Later, they moved to El Paso where Betty continued her education, received her teaching degree from the University of Texas El Paso, and began teaching immediately. She later taught school in the Everman school district for many years and made a lasting impact on countless children’s lives.
Betty enjoyed studying scripture, reflecting in the Word, attending plays, and playing games. She traveled to numerous biblical sites including Israel and the Island of Patmos. Betty was a true animal lover, having several cherished companion dogs over the years. Throughout her life, she always took time to admire the simple things in life and found joy in life’s small everyday blessings. Betty was a light to all who were around her. She was dearly loved by many and was a fast friend to all who were around her. Betty was truly adored by her family and long time friends. To know Betty, was to love her.
Betty was a great and faithful servant to the Lord and was a devout Christian Woman. She volunteered for multiple christian organizations while leading numerous bible studies throughout her life. She was a prayer warrior for all who were in her life. Being a Christian was the essence of who she was. She ceaselessly shared the Gospel to everyone in her life and her character truly exemplified her Christian Faith.
Betty is survived by her son Bryan Hicks of Shallowater and daughter-in-law Mary Hicks of Cleburne. Her two grandchildren are Cody (Logan) Hicks of Bluff Dale; Hunter (Brook) Hicks of Shallowater. Her two great grandchildren are River Hicks and Stormy Carper. Her step daughter is Jeannette (Mike) Evans. Her seven nieces and nephews are Beth, Susan, Lee, Karen, Charles, Steve, and Phil.
We can all rejoice knowing that Betty has now heard the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” May her light continue to shine and be an inspiration to us all.
