Mother Curtis Mae Baker-Akins was born on August 26, 1927 in Irene, Texas to the parentage of Arthur and Pearlie King. She grew up and attended public schools in Irene. She graduated from Irene High School on April 2, 1943. She met and married Edward Arlington Baker on September 17, 1948 they had a son, Melvin Lee Baker. Edward Baker passed away in 1967. She later married Leroy Akins. They were both long time members of the Golden Gate Church of God in Christ until his death. Mother Akins remained a faithful church member at Golden Gate for many years. She served in several leadership roles there including, usher, teacher, committee leader and counselor to younger women and men. She had three brothers, James, Ira and Walter King and eight sisters, Ernestine, Willie, Jessie, Ardelia, Odessa, Bertha, Dorothy and Janie who all preceded her in death. She was an inspiration to those she mentored throughout her life. She leaves to mourn her passing a son, Melvin (Mary) a grandson, Ryan and a host of relatives and friends.
