Nancy was born on October 8th, 1942 in Gonzales, Texas. She grew up on the family farm, among her brothers and the dairy cows. After high school, she attended The University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1964. While an undergrad in Austin, her friend set her up on a date with Wiley Ray Macune, the love of her life. On April 16, 1965, she married Ray in Lake Jackson, Texas, where they made their home for the next 35 years. Nancy was an Elementary school teacher for several years before having children and substitute taught off and on in the community in the following years. She stayed home to raise their three children and was supportive of all of their academic and extracurricular endeavors. Over the years, Nancy was a member of Bible Study Fellowship, United Methodist Women, and American Association of University Women, where she met many lifelong friends. In her spare time, she enjoyed serving at church (Chapel wood UMC in Lake Jackson and Caldwell Methodist), sewing clothes, cross-stitching with friends, playing in a couples’ bridge club, quilting keepsakes, recording bird-sightings, cheering on her Longhorns, two-stepping, reading mysteries, and traveling the world. Nancy traveled to 49 of the 50 United States and multiple countries on her adventures with Ray. They were fond of road trips and took their kids on extensive camping trips across the country just about every summer. Soon after Ray retired, they bought some land for their retirement ranch (“Thistle Ranch”), outside of Caldwell, Texas and built their dream house. They moved there permanently in 2000 and enjoyed the peace and quiet of their front porch out in the country. While there, she immersed herself in quilting and held several leadership positions in the local quilt guilds, entered many quilts in the annual Kolache Festival, taught Sunday School and Bible studies, and volunteered wherever she saw need.
She is survived by:
her husband, Ray; children Kenneth Macune (Chantelle), Michael Macune (NJ), and Lorielle Peterson (John); grandchildren Kyle, Kristine, Hannah, Katie, Owen, and Hadley; three great-grandchildren; her brothers Milton Neitsch, Jr. (Jimmie) and Lewis Neitsch (Birgit); and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Florrie Neitsch.
