On March 12, 1978 in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Ryan Mathue Fegan was born to Marc and Angie Fegan and the world would forever be brighter because he was in it. Growing up an Army brat, he lived all over the US and Europe and was always accepting of different cultures, ideas, and people, even at an early age. In high school, he played football, was on the swim team, marched in the band, and was active in the ROTC. He was a dutiful son and brother, always deepening the connection as he grew older and became more "friend" than "son" or "brother".
After graduation, he pursued a horticulture degree and became a landscaper, but his true professional passion was soon to be discovered - computers and IT. Switching careers is never easy, and Ryan’s transition was no different - yet he never wavered and, in his true spirit, worked hard to achieve his goals. He soon rose to the top of his profession and was known for his resolute work ethic, willingness to help others on their professional journey, honest accountability, and a good laugh. And what a laugh he had - one that could be heard a mile away and would warm your soul.
Upon becoming a government contractor, he was deployed to Afghanistan for almost 3 years. Even in the midst of a war zone, Ryan not only survived - he thrived. He could always make the most spectacular figurative omelet, no matter the eggs he was given. When his deployment was over, he settled down in Charleston, the city he would call “home”. Always one to give fully of himself, he began volunteering with the fire department in addition to continuing his work as a government contractor. He never had just one circle of friends, he always had many - the gaming Smurfs, Drinks in the Driveway companions, poker buddies, fire department comrades, and of course, as the honest and steadfast networker, an extended circle of friends all over the world. If you met him, you loved him. And he never met a stranger.
In August of 2017, a Smurfapalooza trip to Vegas would change the course of his life as he met for the first time in person his soulmate, JaneAnn. An instant connection was made and both parties would forever be changed. He soon moved to Texas and took on his most challenging role - the family man - and like all other roles before, aced it. He was a doting partner and loving father, always protecting and caring for his new family.
He had a twisted sense of humor, but one that was also corny and silly as he told dad jokes and had the best one-liners. He enjoyed a good bourbon or scotch and a slow cigar. If someone was in need, he provided - whether it was mowing the lawn for an elderly neighbor, helping a friend pack and move, or providing comfort and support when anyone was down. He loved to cook and fix up things around the house and his most current mission was to find the best barbecue place in Texas. He brought nothing but laughter, joy, and love wherever he went.
On August 17, 2024 that laughter would be silenced, the joy deafened, but the love will forever continue. Ryan is survived by his parents, Marc and Angie Fegan; brother and sister-in-law, Christopher and Cera Fegan and sons Zachary and Malachi; life partner JaneAnn Morrison and children Jacob and Julia; father-in-love G.C. Brown; and an absolute countless horde of friends.
There will never be another and the world will be less bright without him physically in it. But he will be ever-present in the corny jokes, fire engines, Star Wars vs Dune, homemade spaghetti sauce, song parodies, puns, barbecue, smooth whiskey, Spiderman, goofy socks, kilts, and of course, cigars. Always.
