

Val was born in Fort Worth on September 2nd, 1951. She spent part of her formative years in Oil City, Louisiana, where she maintained lifelong friendships. She attended high school at Paschal High School, and later attended the University of Texas at Arlington. Val was an avid reader, who loved to read about any history, but especially enjoyed Celtic history. She was one of the first volunteers at the North Texas Irish Festival, and was a member of the Southwest Celtic Music Association. Val was passionate about genealogy and held a deep interest in her Celtic roots. She loved Broadway Musicals, and was an avid fan of live theatre. She loved the arts, and enjoyed going to museums. She maintained her Baptist faith throughout her entire life, and reflected this in her actions. She donated to many causes that she believed in, which surrounded that faith.
Val married once, and with that union, she had her only child, Erin. The pride and joy of her life were her grandchildren. She retired from the State of Texas, where she spent many years alternating between Adult Protective Services and Child Protective Services. Due to her years there, she had an indelible impact on countless families and coworkers.
Those who preceded her in death are parents, Thurman E. Smith and Evelyn C Smith and her brother, Thurman E. Smith Jr.
Val is survived by her daughter, Erin Elizabeth English and her husband John English; granddaughter, Colleen Garza and her fiancé Matthew Jimenez, grandson, Joshua Trammell; her brother,David and his wife Mary Smith of Bellaire, TX. Val also leaves a host of cousins and friends spanning the world who will miss her dearly.
