William Paul Steward

Burleson – William “Paul” Steward, 87, passed away January 24, 2022, at Elk Creek Senior Living Community after a long battle with Alzheimer’s/dementia. He was born to William Andrew Steward and Era Maude (Smith) Steward on August 4, 1934, in Goree, TX.

Paul's father worked as a sawmill machinist which took their young family many places throughout western United States. During the summers, he stayed on the farm with his grandparents. He grew up hunting and fishing and bringing home game for supper. Paul always had a hunting dog by his side.

In 1953, Paul graduated high school from Our Lady of Sorrows in Bernalillo, NM. In 1958, he received a civil engineering degree from the University of New Mexico. He met and married the love of his life, Margie Lee Cates on December 23, 1960, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Paul worked for the Federal Highway Administration for 32 years. His job took him from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Washington D.C., and finally to Fort Worth, TX. For a short time after retirement, he worked for Western Quality Systems selling sheet rock to contractors.

Paul and his family became members of the Burleson Church of Christ in the fall of 1977. Paul was involved with the youth group, served as a Bible school teacher, and was a deacon for the 39’ers for many years. He truly cared for his church family.

Paul always had a smile on his face and was happy to see everyone. He has a wonderful laugh and loved to joke and tease. He was a great encourage, tutor, storyteller, mentor and tender-hearted man. Paul had a love for sports. He coached his son and grandson's baseball teams as well as the girl's church softball team. He as an avid outdoorsman. His love for hunting and fishing never lessened. He spent many a night at Elk Creek searching for game! He enjoyed all things ourdoors and had a deep appreciation and respect for all of God's many blessings and creations. He truly was a great example of Christian husband, father and friend.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Gordon, his sister, Maxie, and his granddaughter, Shawna Lee Holland. Paul is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margie Lee (Cates) Steward; children, Kellie Lee and husband Doug, Lanay Wyatt and husband Joseph, Andy Steward and wife Patricia; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; faithful pup companion, Trixie.
