To be forever known as the “Greatest of Grandma’s” Edith Winona (Minnick) Abel passed away peacefully on June 16th, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio, at the age of 99. Born on April 6th, 1926, in Highland Park, California, she lived a long and remarkable life marked by resilience, love and unwavering devotion to her family.
Edith was a woman whose strength and compassion left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Rather than dwell in sorrow at her passing, her family chooses to celebrate the countless cherished memories she created as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. Her radiant smile and the sparkle in her eyes will forever be etched into the hearts of those who love her.
She is survived by a devoted family who adore her deeply: daughters Anna Marie (Abel) Gallion, son in law, James Gallion; Kathleen Mary (Abel) Shively, and son in law, Paul Shively: grandchildren, Rebecca Ann and Richard Zeckzer, Christina Marie Quarles and James L. Underwood, Jason Ryan Quarles, Edwin Shelton Shively: great-grandchildren Samantha Shere, Hayley LaCasse, Caeden Michael Hodgson; and great-great-grandchildren Landon Shere, Nora Shere and Sophia LaCasse.
Each generation carries forward the legacy of love and perseverance that Edith so gracefully embodied.
Edith was preceded in death by her beloved husband Edwin Moore Abel and her brothers John T. Minnick and George N. Minnick, Jr.
In the past two decades of her life, Edith embraced well-deserved travels that brought joy after years of great struggle. Yet it was often the simplest pleasures- a delightful book and a cup of hot chocolate- or tending to her garden, that brought her true contentment. Her life was a testament to quiet strength and enduring dedication to her family. She consistently placed the needs of others before her own with grace and humility.
Her family reflects with gratitude on the example she set, living each day with tenacity and heart. May we all strive to carry forward that same spirit in our own lives.
May her memory bring comfort to those whose knew her.
The family would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to the Staff at Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton for the care and support they provided to Edith and the family.
In Lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in her name to Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton at www.ohioshospice.org. Arrangements entrusted to Anderson Funeral Home, Franklin, Ohio. Fond memories may be shared at www.anderson-fh.com for the Abel Family.
