JD was born in East Texas on December 17, 1920 to James and Eula Henderson. He grew up in Limestone County Texas and worked in a variety of jobs. He met Catherine Noel and was joined in marriage to her in 1942. World War II intervened and shortly after their only child Wanda was born, he was shipped off to the U.S. Army where he served under the infamous Gen. George Patton. Initially he served in North Africa, later in Sicily, Normandy (D Day) and other parts of France where he was wounded. The bullet in his leg saved him from participating in the Battle of the Bulge. He carried the bullet to the day of his death, which made him a disabled veteran. He was decorated with the EAME Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Purple Heart, and Good Conduct Medal. After the war, he moved his family to Monahans, TX, where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier until retiring in 1980.
