My prayers and condolences are with the family.  Amy - thank you for making it possible for me to meet your wonderful dad. I am very thankful for being able to spend time with him last summer. He was a joy to talk to.

Great hosts! Thank you for all the years!

I have many fond memories of Sam and Marjorie through the years.  What a sweet kind man who fed us great meals when we visited them.  My prayers go out to Marjorie and the rest of the family.  A loss will be felt by many.

“YOU RAISE ME UP”
    Dad did “raise us up,” both literally and figuratively. As kids, Dad would often pick us up and throw us into the air. We’d squeal with the thrill of it. And if it was indoors, sometimes we might hit the ceiling! (But we didn’t care.) Or he’d get us down on Mom’s highly polished wood floors, grab our feet and spin us around and around until we were dizzy. 
   He loved to have fun with Joni, Brian and I, even through our teenage years. He was a good water skier himself, then he’d drive the boat for all of us kids, and for our kids! We would tube and water ski on Lake Cumberland all day long. Later in life, Dad was one heck of a good golfer.
    Dad was a good example of the balance one needs in life: He was the epitome of the “Work Hard, Play Hard” philosophy.
    And Dad did work hard. When we were young, he would work all day at Armco Steel, come home to eat, then work nights at the gas station. On weekends he did auto paint jobs in our garage. If we wanted to see him, we had to be an assistant in the garage, sanding and taping the cars he planned to paint. Or, Mom would take us down to the gas station for a fill up so we’d get to see him more.
    Dad taught us how to do things: How to ride a bike, do tricks on the trampoline, mow the lawn, drive a tractor, ride a horse, water ski and drive a car. And he also showed us the importance of volunteering. He was a Deacon at church, a Franklin City Councilman and Mayor, a Rotary member, and a ready volunteer whenever a worthy cause needed extra hands.
    Both of our parents showed us the meaning of success through a combination of education and being a self-made individual. Dad pursued education through his job. This effort, plus his uncanny ability to figure things out, helped him rise steadily through the ranks at A.K. Steel. I remember him being gone for days when a tanker full of hot steel ran off the rails on an overpass, endangering the public and stopping traffic. Of all the engineering specialists called in to help, Dad was the only person with a viable idea to move the tanker and prevent it from tipping over, so A.K. gave him the job over the experts!
    Another highlight of his career was his contribution to the Torpedo Rail Car.  Dad and a team refurbished a rail car to haul a 200,000 lb. load of hot metal at 2000 degrees over a 100 mile route. This vehicle broke a world record for the number of miles metal could be hauled at extreme temperatures. 
    When he retired, Dad was the head of 2 maintenance departments. He was responsible for everything within the plant that moved which included 9,400 pieces of equipment. He managed 3 supervisors and 175 mechanics. He had a remarkable career for a man with a high school degree!
    But most important was Dad’s love and the care he gave to Mom…from her long-term illness as a teenager to her time in Hospice. Dad and Mom were together from the moment they met in the Franklin high school band at age 14.  When Mom first became ill, Dad would bring her schoolwork home every day so she could not only keep up, but excel. In Mom’s later years, he gave her extreme care and consistent companionship. 
    When we’d visit our parents at Deerfield Retirement Community in North Carolina, Dad would always say he’d “had a good life.” I’m so glad he felt that way. I’ll always be proud of him and thankful for everything he did for me, for my children, and for all our family.
    Yes, Dad, you did “Raise Me Up”… in so many ways.
