At the age of 19, Avel enlisted in the United States Navy at Sangley Point in Cavite City. He then went on to complete boot camp and school in San Diego, CA. Two years later, he returned to the Philippines to marry his high school sweetheart, Victoria (Vickie) Estella. They wed on November 26, 1967. A couple years later, they welcomed their first born and only son, Allan. Shortly after, he moved his family to the United States. It was not long until Avel volunteered to serve his country in the Vietnam War. He deployed to Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. As recognition for his service, Avel was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Three years after his return, Avel and Vickie welcomed their daughter, Vivian. He was then stationed in Maryland where their youngest Valerie was born.
During the tail end of Avel’s career in the US Navy, he was a part of a flight crew (VP-31), which was based in Moffett Field. It was during this time, he had the opportunity to travel to various places around the world. He traveled to Africa, New Zealand, and all throughout Europe and Asia. In his travels, he enjoyed collecting souvenirs, which are still displayed throughout his house. After 24 years of dedicated service, Avel retired from the Navy in 1989. During his military career, he also earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.
There is no doubt that Avel was an incredibly hard working man. He was able to achieve the “American Dream” and build a life in the United States. He instilled his astounding work ethic into both his children and grandchildren. His infamous words “sacrifice now, enjoy life later” are forever ingrained in their lives. Avel will always be remembered for his warm and caring heart. He was a selfless man that always took care of his family and their needs before his own. Avel is the true epitome of a good man, a family man, as he was his beloved wife’s rock and the anchor to his entire family.
Sadly, on November 3, 2023, Avel passed away. He is now reunited with his son, Allan and grandson, AJ in Heaven. As the family’s comedian, he is now able to tell an endless amount of jokes and play his favorite sport, basketball, with Allan and AJ once again.
Avel is survived by his loving wife Victoria, his daughters Vivian and Valerie, daughter-in-law Marjorie and four grandchildren Malina, Noah, Aloysius, and Filumena.
