

Carmencita Celzo Laya was born on January 6, 1953 in Manila, Philippines to Paulino and Esmerilla Celzo. She was the youngest of ten siblings. Carmencita was married to Avelino Laya on February 21, 1983 at Central United Methodist Church in Manila, Philippines. She immigrated to the United States in August of 1977 and resided on the beautiful island of Hawai’i. During this period of her life, she dealt with having to assimilate to a brand-new culture but took the leap of faith in hopes for a better opportunity. Years later, Carmencita and her husband moved to California to start a new chapter in their lives. She worked as a nursing assistant at Palo Alto VA Medical Center before going on permanent disability due to kidney failure. Carmencita lived a long and obedient Christian life. She was a faithful member of Valley Faith United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in their Chancel Choir. She was also an active member of The United Methodist Women’s and Saints Alive group and would regularly attend Adult Sunday School, bible studies and prayer meetings. All her life Carmencita was a blessing to others and unselfishly generous with her time. She showed compassion not only for her family, but also those who she cared for. She showed resilience in her ongoing fight with her health complications and showed a true fighting spirit until the very end. Carmencita’s life will continue to serve as an inspiration to always stay strong in your faith despite all of life’s trials and tribulations. Carmencita went to be with the Lord and her husband on February 24, 2024. She is remembered through her two sons, Jake and Jeffrey.
