April 19, 2022, two days after Easter, Dionisio Agtarap Elumba Jr. at the age of 92, peacefully left the world of the living. He is now reunited with his beloved wife Prisca and son Joselito in heaven.
Dionisio was born October 14, 1929 in Malate, Manila, Philippines to Dionisio Elumba Sr. and Justina Agtarap. He was the oldest of 8 children.
He went to Ermita Elementary School for his primary education and University of the Philippines for high school. His mother wanted him to become a doctor. After high school graduation, he was accepted at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. Sadly, during his second year at the university, his mother passed away, followed a few months later by his father. Unable to continue his studies due to financial difficulties, he had to drop out of Medical School to look for a job in order to help support his younger siblings. He worked at the Far Eastern University Hospital as a laboratory technician, before moving to the small town of Balaoan, La Union. There, he worked at a medical clinic owned by an uncle. He also worked as a public inspector at Balaoan Health Center.
He married Prisca Ordinario in May 4, 1957 and was blessed with two daughters, Justina (her grandmother’s namesake), Maria Luningning, and son Joselito who passed away March 18, 2014.
Dionisio wanted a better opportunity to support his growing family so he resigned from Public Health service and went back to Manila where he found a day job at Insular Life, an insurance company. At night, he attended classes at the University of the East, eventually earning a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Through loyalty, perseverance, and dedication to Insular Life, he rose through the ranks and finally retired as Assistant Vice President after 25 years of service.
He also had a deep passion and appreciation for music. He learned to play violin at the early age of nine and was very good at it. He would serenade his family and entertain friends to their delight. He also enjoyed playing golf.
After his retirement, Dionisio and his wife migrated to the United States, followed soon after by his family. He is survived by his daughters Justina, Maria and her husband Daniel Tiburcio, daughter-in-law Liza Tomeldan-Elumba, sister Isabelita Mendoza, grandchildren Angelica, Adrian, and Jayson Elumba, Gabriel and Nikola Tiburcio as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and large circle of relatives and friends here and in the Philippines.
