In Oakland on October 16th, 2013 at age 80. Beloved wife of the late Eugene Vernon Souza, loving mother to Sean Mahoney (Dana), Colleen Mahoney Osterberg (Dan); and stepchildren Steve and Tracy Souza. Absolutely adored grandchildren Daniel Osterberg, Brayce and Blayre Mahoney, and Austin and Melanie Cox. Joyce was born in Oakland, CA on April 5, 1933 to Necia Rafferty (Hayward) and Hubert Rafferty, and was raised by her grandparents Effie and Claude Rafferty. She also leaves behind siblings Steve Rafferty (Susan), Valerie Figueroa (Jimmy) and Candy Scherner, and many nephews and cousins.
Growing up, Joyce loved exploring the streets of Oakland, she graduated from Castlemont High School, where she excelled in sports. After high school graduation, she joined the Air Force proudly serving her country for almost 5 years, living in Japan for 2 years and receiving an Honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant. Joyce was a friend to all and was a true Trailblazer, having joined the Air Force in 1950, she was the lone female on the train to Wyoming to begin serving her country.
Joyce would do anything for animals and spent a lot of time helping others, in any way she could. She was THE Lady in a Cage for the Fairmont Animal Shelter annual fundraiser; she lived in that cage on Safeway’s parking lot until a specific amount of money was raised. She helped Sunshine Rescue and Four Paws (now Dusty Paws) Rescue and would appreciate in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in her name.
