Longtime Milpitas resident
Mabel Yvonne Mattos
passed away Monday
morning at the age of 89.
Born on Dec. 19, 1923
in Madera, Calif., Mrs.
Mattos was considered one
of the town’s foremost historians
and was known for
her energy, flowers, sharp
memory, hospitality, homemade
pies and apricot jam,
picked from the family’s
hillside orchard.
She was a Milpitas resident
since age 11, when she
came as one of more than a
dozen share-cropping families
on the Downing
Ranch. She and her family
later moved to a house on
Old Calaveras Road.
She enjoyed gardening
and attending the meetings
and functions of the
Milpitas Historical Society
and Green Thumb Garden
Club; she was an honorary
member of both.
Mrs. Mattos is survived
by son James J. Mattos;
daughter-in-law Karen L.
Mattos; grandson James J.
Mattos Jr.; granddaughters
Emily A. Mattos, Sarah B.
Mattos and Valeria Mattos-
Jamison (who is expecting),
which would have given
Mrs. Mattos her first greatgrandchild;
daughter-inlaw
Mickie Mattos; sister
Betty Furtado; and many
nieces, nephews and
cousins.
Mrs. Mattos was preceded
in death by first husband
Joseph A. Mattos, second
husband Henry L. Mattos
and son Alan A. Mattos.
A viewing will be held
Monday, June 17 from 10
a.m. to 9 p.m., and
Tuesday, June 18 from 10
a.m. to 9 p.m. at Lima
Family Milpitas Fremont
Mortuary. A Rosary will be
held Tuesday, June 18 at 6
p.m. at Lima Family
Mortuary in Fremont.
Services will be Wednesday,
June 19 at 10:30 a.m. at St.
Elizabeth Catholic Church
in Milpitas, with interment
following at Calvary
