August served in the army during World War II from 1941 to 1945.
After the war, "as the story goes", he attended beauty and barber college to meet a beautiful woman. There he met the love of his life, Marion Howell.
He moved to Fresno when they married and started A&M Beauty Supply and Marion's Beauty Salon next door to one another which continue to operate sucessfully today.
August purchased property on Palm and Andrews where he opened a dine-in restaurant called Der Chuck a Lou and the Metzler Bakery. Honey, not sugar, was used in the baked items. Also, he did not allow smoking in the dining area during the 1960's.
August was a gentle giant to all that knew him. He truly loved his work and all the women he met, Marion was never jealous, she always knew she was his true love.
Each day at work, he brought all the girls at Marion's a rose, which he placed on the front desk and one for each of the women at A&M. Now when you see a rose garden, maybe you will remember August and smile.
August was preceded in death by Marion, his wife of 53 years; son, Chuck Howell; brothers, Elmer and Roy; and sister, Helen Lingar.
August is survived by his daughter, Sally Bukilica and her husband Robert; son, Lewis Howell; brother, Ervie Metzler; twelve grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchil- dren; and many nieces and nephews.
No visitation will be held.
A Funeral Service will be held at The Well Church, on the corner of Palm and Gettysburg, on Monday, September 13, 2010, at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be made to donor's favorite charity.
