

Fresno, California - August (Gus) Short, age 77, beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Teacher, Coach and Navy Veteran died July 19, 2022 in Fresno, Ca.
Gus is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bernice Short (Brindeiro); his sons, Michael August Roberts-Short and Matthew Short; his sister, Sarah Caruso (Short); his daughters in law, Heather Roberts-Short and Sarah Short; and his grandchildren, Spencer August Short, Ava Short, Devin Roberts-Short, Ayla Roberts-Short and Amelia Roberts-Short. He is proceed in death by his parents, Howard W. Short, Sr. and Mary Short (Polivka); and his brother, Howard Short, Jr.
Gus was born May 12, 1945 in Pittsburgh, PA to his parents, Howard and Mary. He graduated from Baldwin High School, Pittsburgh, PA in 1963 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy the same year. Gus spent the majority of his enlistment at Lemoore NAS where he served as a Naval Aviation Electrician. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1967. On June 17, 1967, he married Bernice, the love of his life. He went on to earn his AA Degree while also coaching football at Fresno City College. After leaving FCC he earned his B.S., Teacher' Credential and M.S. from Cal. State University of Fresno.
Gus was a dedicated and hardworking teacher and coach. He began his career with short stints at Fresno City College, Parlier High School, Kerman High School and Laton High School. Gus spent the bulk of his career (25 years) teaching Science and coaching Football, Basketball and Track at Roosevelt High School. Gus also became interested in musical theater while teaching at Roosevelt HS. After retiring from teaching and coaching, Gus continued his love for acting and dancing as a member of The Good Company Players and New Wrinkles Performers. In 2003 Gus was enshrined as a Cornerstone on the Fresno City College Football Wall of Fame. Gus served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Anthony of Padua Church for over 30 years. He enjoyed fitness, music and watching football. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandpa. He was patriotic, spiritual, enthusiastic, strong and supportive. Gus would do anything he could for anyone that asked. He will always be missed and never forgotten.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at St. Paul Catholic Newman Center on 1572 E. Barstow, Fresno. Please join the family for the viewing at 4:00 PM followed by the Rosary Service at 6:00 PM Tuesday, July 26 at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home, 826 E. Nees Ave., Fresno.
