He married Wynona M. Ray in 1937. He moved to California in 1939 and worked in the shipyards at Mare Island for the war effort. He then moved to Fresno.
Carthel retired from Valley Ice Co. in 1972. He operated his auto repair shop until 1995 and spent his last years taking care of his wife until she passed away.
He is preceded in death by son, Michael Elliott Emerson in 1972 ; and his wife Wynona in 2007.
Carthel leaves behind two sons and their wives, Carthel Ray and Janice Emerson and Jeffery L. and Karen Emerson; his adopted daughter, Shirleen Mitchell; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Stephens & Bean Chapel on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.
A Graveside Service will be held at Fresno Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at 11:00 a.m.
Remembrances may be made to Hinds Hospice.
