

Charles “Chuck” Hideaki Goto passed away on July 8, 2023 a resident of Clovis, California. He was born on May 27, 1929 in Guadalupe, California. Chuck is survived by his beloved wife, Hanako (Nancy) of 64 years; children; Mark (Lori), Ed, and Joy; 4 grandchildren, Hannah, Emi, Mollie, Miya; cousins, nieces, and nephews. During WWII, he and his family were interned at the Japanese American incarceration camps in Gila River and Tule Lake. After the war, he worked for the railroad in Oregon and Northern California before moving to the Central Valley (Fowler then Fresno). During the Korean War, he served in the 7th Cavalry Division Headquarters Company and in the First Cavalry Division of the Army from 1951-53. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal and earned the Expert Combat Infantryman Badge. His awards include the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, National Defense Service, Army of Occupation (Japan) Medal, and ROK War Service Medal. Chuck worked at Fresno City College for 25 years as a landscaper/groundskeeper to always keep the campus grounds beautiful. He enjoyed traveling with his family to Japan and throughout the U.S. visiting his children. He will be remembered for his artistic ability (sign painting, hand lettering, and pottery), his spontaneous sense of humor, and easy conversation. He hand-painted birthday signs for his children and grandchildren and volunteered his time including sign painting for many events with the Fresno Betsuin, and for others in the community.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 10:00 am, at the Fresno Buddhist Temple, 2690 E. Alluvial Ave. Fresno, CA 93720.
