Charles Allen Greenfield of Visalia, known to all as Allen or Grandpa Allen, passed away at the age of 91 on Wednesday, May 16. Allen was born in 1920 to B. Ray Greenfield and Georgia Winifred Greenfield in Santa Cruz, CA. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Marguerite, Meredith, and Winifred and his wife of almost 64 years, Jean.
He graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1938. In May of 1942, he married Jean Leider of Fresno, CA. Allen was part of America’s Greatest Generation. In November of 1942, Allen went into the Army where he served as an MP until 1946. In 1945, their son Rod was born and in 1955 they adopted their daughter Trish.
Following his discharge from the Army, Allen worked in many different occupations. He was a mechanic, a service station manager, a truck driver, fast food restaurant owner, and a real estate agent. But, the one area where he spent most of his career was in the dairy industry as a sales rep, plant manager, and his own milk distributorship for Foremost Dairies.
Allen loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with all his heart. Wherever he lived Allen was always involved with his church. At various times he served as an usher, an Elder, and a Deacon. He was a member of Visalia First Presbyterian Church and could often be found helping out in the Children’s Ark preschool. Each year he would hand make wooden piggy banks for each of the graduating children in the program. And, if you were in need of a cane, hand him a pool cue and he would create one for you.
Allen is survived by his son Rod, daughter-in-law Carol, his daughter Trish, and his granddaughter Janine. Oh, and let’s not forget his cat Scooter.
A graveside service will be held at Belmont Memorial Park in Fresno, 10 AM, Thursday, May 24, followed by a service of remembrance at 2 PM, Visalia First Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Visalia, Paralyzed Veterans of America, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
