She was born in Mount Pleasant, MI, to Charles and Rose Campbell in August of 1931, and was the seventh of nine children. She attended Sacred Heart Academy, and graduated in 1949. She received her diploma from Mercy School of Nursing of Detroit, and graduated in 1952.
Dorothy married John Phillips, MD, in 1953. She worked as a Registered Nurse in the Midwest before moving to California in 1960. While raising her children, she began working at St. Agnes Hospital. She was instrumental in opening and staffing the Outpatient Recovery Cardiac Cath Unit. She proudly wore her nursing cap long after it became unfashionable.
After a long career, Dorothy retired in 1993, and became active in community life. She was a patriotic woman who actively participated in the local political process, and served as the neighborhood watch captain for 21 years. She volunteered at the La Tienda Guild Thrift Store managing the stuffed animal and shoe donations. Her garden was a source of great joy, and she never missed the Home and Garden Tour. Cheering on the Fresno State Bulldogs, San Francisco 49ers and Giants was a favorite pastime.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Pat Phillips, MD, and wife Ann; Amy Tobin, RN, and husband Rich; Mike Phillips and wife Tami; Melissa Hull and husband Kevin; Tom Phillips; Joe Phillips and wife Stephanie; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her little dog Muttley.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care received by the Hinds Hospice team.
