Father Ed, as he was known to most of his parishioners, passed peacefully with his sister Marie at his side on Friday, September 13, 2013. Father Ed was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Julius and Henrietta Sommer Poschen. Edward was the youngest of three siblings and had two loving sisters, Margaret Tomlitz (deceased) and Marie Dunn of Santa Clara.
Father Ed entered the seminary and completed his high school and college education at the Josephinum in Worthington, Ohio. He was ordained on May 30, 1953, and recently celebrated his 60th anniversary in the priesthood.
Father Ed spent his career in 12 different parishes throughout the Fresno Diocese. He was fluent in Spanish and worked very closely with the migrant population as well as his loving parishioners until he retired in June 2000.
Ed loved to travel throughout the world and enjoyed many of those trips with his sisters Margo and Marie. Uncle Ed also enjoyed many trips to Santa Clara where he would spend time with his many nieces and nephews. He loved playing cards including countless games of gin rummy with his mother and the many family poker games. He had a great poker face but had a jovial laugh and always had some good jokes and anecdotes to pass along.
Ed played football in his younger days and was a sports enthusiast, enjoyed golfing and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan until the very end!
One of his greatest passions was music. Ed loved to sing and sing some more. He had a great voice and knew the words to hundreds of songs and never missed the opportunity to join in with all his friends and sing on a daily basis.
