congratulations to Gerald W. Ferguson for his induction to the Scottsbluff hall of fame at his former high school today 10/13/2023. No 33 for the Nebraska cornhuskers. I first became acquainted  with Coach Ferguson during a PE class in my sophomore year at FHS. We were playing a type of football called "Kanaka."  I could rollout to my opposite side and throw the ball through  the goal from about 40 yards out.  He suggested  that I come out for JV Football. At that stage of my development , I only weighed 135 pounds and my dad was having none of it.

Some years later as an undergraduate  at  UC-Santa Cruz, I was writing a feature article for a journalism course--about steroid use  in mainstream American sports. I asked if he would want to be part of the article and he told me to come on over to the high school.

I remember asking some tough questions and he gave me some very thoughtful and erudite answers. We talked extensively about football, both at the high school level and about changes to the professional game. By the time we had finished, close to two hours had elapsed. Even though I had never played a down for him, the very fact that I was a former Fremont student  carried the day.

Some years later I ran into Coach at the San Francisco 49ers training camp in Rocklin, California. By then I was a professionally-trained journalist/reporter. I was there to interview Darian Hagan, a record-setting option quarterback  from the University of  Colorado who was trying to make the team as  a special teams standout.

I went over to say hello and his eyes just seemed to sparkle. He was truly jazzed for me. It was as if I were one of his own kids!!
To me Coach was  and will always remain as the last vestige of  what is often referred to as "old school." 

I consider it a great honor and pleasure to have crossed paths
with him during my lifetime. He truly was one of the very best and I shall miss him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Beverly and family.

I am saddened for your loss but we do have many wonderful memories of our coaching days. Jerry was so supportive when he retired from his head coaching duties and allowed me to take the reigns. I will never forget! He touched so many lives in a positive way. Our thoughts a prayers are with all of you.

Of all the people I've had the pleasure to be associated with, I regard Coach Ferguson to be one of the greatest of the bunch. It is an honor to have had him as my coach, 50 years ago, at Fremont High for both the 1963 SCVAL Championship and 1964 Seasons. 
Thanks Coach for making what you've done, and who you were, so memorable for so many for so many years!

He was a Special Human Being, that goes without saying. We called him for advice after High School. Invited him to our Wedding. Played golf at Wildwood with him. He Shot 75 when he was 75. Just wish could have hung with him more in recent years. Amazing guy, We had major respect for. Like Jack W. said, we knew he loved us all. Love you Coach.

Fall of 63 at Fremont HS- Coach Ferguson was a living legend and it was  truly an honor to play on his team. You were an inspiraton to sports and team work and the discipline required to do ones best. Thanks Coach and God Bless..

I remember that it was coach Ferguson that gave me my first tape job for a weak ankle while playing "C" Basketball. Fond memories.  May the hope of our Lord be ever most in the hearts of his family.

As my Pole vault coach and mentor I always will remember his spirit and his love for sunflower seeds. He was like a father to me during high school.  Russ Royal
