Julia Leija Campos and Benito Campos crossed the Rio Grande to settle in Pharr, Texas where their son, Hipolito Campos, was born on July 11, 1956. Affectionately called Paul by those that could not pronounce his name. Benito’s work took the family to Arizona in 1964 and eventually to Mendota, California in 1965, where they would call home for the rest of their lives. Paul spent the summers with the family picking crenshaw, honeydew and cassava melons in the fields. Paul graduated from Tranquility High School where he excelled on the baseball diamond and football field. He eventually found work laying concrete, a field where he excelled as a Concrete Finisher for over 40 years and started his own concrete company in Fresno. After finding sobriety, Paul worked as a counselor to help others fight their addiction. He was a member of Southpoint Church in Fresno. Paul was an adamant animal lover and cared deeply for each of his pets…but especially his dog, Fred.
Paul is survived by his brother Joe Leija and sisters Dora Campos and Nora Bernal, his five children, Steven, Sonja, Julian, Julia and Jessica Campos along with his six grandchildren, Isaac Campos, Jarpollo Ponnell, Jalen Ponnell, Jordan Ponnell, Jeremiah Ponnell and Penelope Campos.
He is reunited in Heaven with his parents, Julia and Benito Campos and his brothers, Benito Jr, George and Benjamin Campos.
A memorial service for Hipolito will be held Saturday, September 10, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Calaveras Chapel, 1605 L Street, Fresno, CA 93721.
