Our Beloved Papa Jim passed peacefully into the Arms of Jesus surrounded by his family. Jim was born in Fort Morgan, CO, to Sam and Marie Ruhl. They moved to the Bay Area in his early childhood where he rooted for the SF Seals, watched the dirigibles in the Bay, and tended his WWII Victory Garden. Kingsburg was next, where he excelled in sports in HS. He then attended Fresno State, where he earned his BA and MA. He was a member of SAE fraternity, Blue Key Society, the Bulldog football team, and was elected “Campus King” in ’54. The football player met the pep girl in 1955 and their love story began. Barbie was the love of his life for over 67 years, and together they exemplified a loving, Godly marriage, enduring the most difficult of storms.
Jim began his football coaching career in Chowchilla and Lemoore. After moving to Reedley College, he was invited into the business world with a good buddy and they started DonRu Sales, selling yearbooks and class rings across the Valley. In 1965, Jim was involved in a near-fatal auto accident that changed his life’s trajectory. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and was paralyzed on his left side. After two months in the hospital, and two years of determination and home rehab; Jim not only walked but ran everywhere. He returned to coaching for 20 years at Fowler HS, where Coach Ruhl “Coacher” became well known for his running, quick wit, and competitive spirit.
With the help of good friends, he was able to return to the tennis court and could be heard every Saturday morning on Court 8 at Fig Garden Swim & Racquet with his best buddy, Jack. Much laughter and jokes were heard on that court.
As Jim advanced in age, his previous brain injury led to dementia, an entirely new and cruel enemy. In spite of it all, Jim loved life and his family, and they loved him! One of his classic sayings was, “There are only 2 kinds of days: good and better.” Jim had the ability to make anyone feel like the most important person in the room.
Jim is survived by his wife, Barbara Ruhl. Daughters: Kathie Radie (Dave) of Nipomo and children Clark Barbieri (Helen) and Kara Samaniego (Brian); Karen Ruhl of Fresno and children Jenny McLaskey (Tim) and Matt Fugman (Kathy); and Susan Oneal of San Jose and children Nicole Oneal and Chris Oneal. He is also survived by 7 Great grandchildren and his brother Sam Ruhl of Tenn.
A private celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that remembrances be sent to Break The Barriers, Hope Program.
