He graduated from San Leandro High School, attended San Francisco City College, and graduated from Fresno State College of Engineering in 1951.
John retired in 1987 as a Supervising Associate Highway Engineer, after 36 years at CalTrans (Division of Highways). His interests in life were reading, traveling, hiking, bowling, and was an avid San Francisco Giants fan.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and his twin brother Joseph Mathias Hawthorne; and Mary's twin sister Margaret Hawthorne.
He is survived by his wife, of 42 years, Martha Sanger Hawthorne; sister, Mary Riley; niece, Moria Riley, all of Fresno; niece, Adrienne Prince and her husband Ty of San Luis Obispo; brother-in-law, John Sanger of Marysville, CA; nieces, Judy Sanger of Sunnyvale, CA, Marilyn Sanger of Yuba City, CA; and nephew Dr. Mike Sanger of Murfreesboro, Tn.
A Graveside Service will be held at Clovis Cemetery on Friday, May 18, 2012, at 1:00 p.m.
