Born and raised in Fresno—where he spent most of his life and his final years—John was a man of quiet complexity. He loved fishing, hunting, and history, and had a sharp mind for math—qualities that made him both analytical and a tough poker player. Though he lived briefly in Southern California, his heart always belonged to Fresno.
John is survived by his children—Jamie Pereira, Zack Roberts, and Justin Roberts—and by six grandchildren, each of whom he connected with in his own unique way. His former wife and mother of his children, Debbie, remained an important part of his life.
In his later years, John found a deeper closeness with family—not always in traditional ways, but in the ways that mattered. He quietly showed love, and loudly shared his opinions and jokes, both of which are deeply missed. Many years ago, he made a humanitarian choice that continues to shape how we understand him today. Even the quiet ways he cared were unique, complicated but yet surprisingly beautiful.
For those who knew him, play a hand of poker and go all in, or buy a Frappe for your friends in his memory. And if you listen closely, you just might hear him yell his infamous “Yikes!” from above.
Love you always and forever Dad.
